WELCOME TO MARBLE FALLS LAKEFEST

LakeFest 2008, August 8th-10th, marks the 17th year that the Marble Falls/Lake LBJ Chamber of Commerce transforms Lake Marble Falls into a liquid quarter-mile "racetrack" and the banks of the lake into a wild three-day boat race party.

On Friday, more than 120 boats go in the water for Test & Tune. Drag boat fans swarm Johnson Park on Friday evening for a chance to get up-close and personal with the drivers and boats at Show & Shine. Fans have an opportunity to purchase official shirts and posters for autographs and have their picture taken with the stars of the show. The highlight of the evening comes at dusk as top-fuelers "fire up," shooting flames out exhaust pipes and splitting every ear-drum in the park. Immediately following Show & Shine, a concert featuring Kelly Willis and Bruce Robison will begin in Lakeside Park.

Gates open bright and early on Saturday at 7 a.m. for qualifying races that last all day. Experience “The Gambler” where racers of all classes go head to head based on the luck of the draw.

Early-birds can arrive Sunday at 7 a.m. to see another round of “The Gambler” and get a great seat for opening ceremonies at noon when the Top-fuel boats thrill crowds with astonishing speeds up to 240 miles per hour. The day will end with the awards ceremony following the last race.

U. S. First Female Mayor

In 1917, an all male electorate in Marble Falls chose a women as their mayor. Texas had never seen a women mayor before, even more important, the event was a first for the U.S. Less than three years later, the 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution gave women the right to vote, which also made Mrs. George Ophelia "Birdie" Harwood the only woman mayor elected by an all male electorate.

Birdie Harwood ran on a platform of "A bigger town, a better town, a cleaner town and a more progressive town."

Against some critical and less progressive elements, she defended her mayoral run, saying "A womens first duty is to her home and children. When she has raised them up to take their place in the world, it is then her duty to turn to her state and there help make a fit, abiding place for them."

The Harwood administration took over with a promise to publish a semi-annual and annual budget. True to her word, Harwood saw to it that a budget and municipal activity summary were published in the Marble Falls Messenger.

Harwood endorsed prohibition during her tenure. Harwood also called for a clean-up day to burn trash and combat a fly problem in the city. Her administration mandated automobile drivers had to honk their horns when turning corners and to stay to the right of turning posts.

By the end of her administration' Harwood and other city leaders had put Marble Falls on the road to becoming the tourist attraction it is today.

Have a Happy Fourth of July. I will be judging the second annual Granite Shoals Ugly Dog Contest on Saturday July 5. There will be all kinds of games for the kids and an Ugly Dog Bar-B-Que. If your in the area come by the park on Phillips Ranch Road in Granite Shoals and join the fun. My favorite contest is the owner-dog look alike contest. Starts at 10:00 a.m. with judging around 1:30 p.m.

Kayak For A Good Cause

The great Castell Kayak Race for Livestrong will be held June 6 and 7 to benefit cancer survivors, their families and research. Any floating device is eligible. There will be plenty of fun for all ages and lots of kayaking.

An auction will be held June 6 in Llano at the Badu House, 615 Bessemer St. Have dinner and wine, bid on antiques, art, services, vacations and more. The cost is $50. a person.

The race is June 7. It starts at the U.S. 87 bridge at Llano River bridge at the Llano River RV Park. The entry fee is $35 and registration is at 8 a.m. The competition ends at Riversounds, 12 miles downstream at Castell. Live music, prizes, and barbecue will be featured. Picking strawberries can be one sweet adventure, Though the Highland Lakes area has a reputation for peaches, pecans and grapes, there are strawberries, to whet your appetite. A great place to pick some is Sweet Berry Farms.

With its unique climate and soils, award winning wines are being produced right here in the Highland Lakes area. Make it a point to visit one or more.

Several have "wine clubs" that you can sign up for and the wineries will keep you informed about special events they offer.
